When I was a kid, my family traveled all over the world. We had a name for the Marriotts and Hyatts of the world - plastic American hotels - and they were to be avoided. While those kinds of places have their purpose, I realized quite young there's nothing better than a cool, funky, weird, charming, odd or endearing hotel or B&B to add an extra layer of fun to your trip. Okay, perhaps the place in Puno, Peru that turned off the water at night was a little bit much, but it sure made for good conversation later.

In any case, whether it costs 80 dollars or 800 dollars, I don't much care (especially if its not my money), but I do care about interesting.

I've been writing about hotels for almost ten years now, whether it be for print or online guidebooks, online magazines or print magazines. My articles have appeared in Budget Travel, Newsweek, US Airways Magazine, The Houston Chronicle and a host of others.
